Slumdog Millionaire doesn’t try to act westernized like all other films in Bollywood are trying to do. It is a complete Hindi film with a raw Indian feel to it. Nothing is glamorized. The slums in Mumbai are shown exactly as they are. In short, the film is about two childhood lovers Jamal and Latika (played by Dev Patel and Freida Pinto) who get separated because of unfortunate events. After being reunited and separated for the second time, Jamal winds up as a contestant on “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire” because he knows that his love will be watching (the game show is apparently very popular in India).
How does he know all the answers? All the questions, as shown in the flashbacks throughout the film, are related to some part his life.Acting wise, Dev Patel doesn’t do much but open his mouth and look confused the entire film - but then again, that is what his character is supposed to be. The best way to describe Freida Pinto in one word is HOT. Looks like she has a lot of potential to make it in Hollywood. Anil Kapoor as the host of “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire” is okay but it would have been better to have Shah Rukh Khan or Amitabh Bachan since they have actually hosted it in India. Shah Rukh Khan was actually offered the role but rejected it. He can say he doesn’t regret rejecting it all he wants - he is lying. Slumdog Millionaire has become a worldwide rage. It just might even win the Oscar.
Music wise, AR Rahman is on top of his game. The musical pieces he has done fit the film perfectly. There are only two actual songs, Ringa Ringa and Jai Ho. Ringa Ringa is a very raunchy and naughty track - kind of reminds one of Choli Ke Peechay from Khalnayak. The song Jai Ho was supposed to be in Yuvraaj actually, but Subhash Ghai decided he didn’t want it. This proves that Subhash Ghai has officially lost his mind. He kept utterly disgusting crap like “Shano Shano” and rejected “Jai Ho”? What the?
If you like Bollywood films, then do not miss Slumdog Millionaire. It is basically a Bollywood love story, only better!
